For Medics, By Medics
Include the Community We Seek to Serve
Philosophically, we are supportive of a concept that is a bit 'radical' in the prehospital and medical communities. We actually believe that the best medical direction advice for working paramedics is likely from experienced, working paramedics. We think that those best positioned to support nursing practice in the field are experienced nurses who practice in the field. While we have some pretty good physicians and nurse practitioners in the fold, it's a bit 'old school' to try to re-create at top down, hierarchical approach.
And yet, we are not in the position to change the laws on the matter in every province at this point in time. There are encouraging moves in some provinces about a College of Paramedicine, and moves to autonomous practice will almost certainly be seen in the near to mid-term. Until then, let's get ahead of the curve by inviting and creating leadership opportunities for those who want to influence, write, evaluate and otherwise improve peer practice.
Our goal is to have input from each professional category in each province to shape and influence the program and policies to 'right fit' this for best possible supported practice.
